Bio:
Hello! My name is Kristyn Shobert, and I am the 7th Social Studies teacher at CHIME Charter Middle School. I received my Bachelor of Science Degree in Secondary Education and Single Subject Teaching Credential from the Pennsylvania State University, University Park, Pennsylvania, in 1993.
Before arriving at CHIME in 2005, I had the opportunity to develop and implement several innovative experiential education programs, including the Girls A.C.T.I.O.N. Program, an outward-bound program for 8 to 14 year old girls, and W.I.L.D., an adventure education program for At-Risk teens. In addition, I taught Current World Problems and Environmental Studies at the Columbia-Montour Alternative Education Program, and Third Grade at Santa Susana Academy.
My philosophy of education is firmly rooted in providing meaningful and accessible instruction for all students. I strongly believe in the principles of Experiential-Based Learning, and have worked tirelessly to create a meaningful, hands-on Social Studies curriculum at CHIME. Students in my class will engage in "History Alive's" thought provoking and "active instruction" on a daily basis, which has proven to strengthen problem-solving and interpersonal skills, as well as foster a love of learning. Additionally, the students will be actively exposed to the works of Robert Brooks and Rick Lavoie, and will learn to understand the mindsets and motivations that guide their learning.
Homework:
Homework will be given everyday. Assignments will be posted on the homework board in my classroom, as well as on my homework page. Homework will be explained in class so that students understand the expectations. Students are responsible for all homework assignments. If a student is absent, the homework can be picked up by the student's Hometeam teacher. Please call in advance so the Hometeam teacher has enough time to collect the work. Please also find a few homework buddies who you can call with homework questions!
Student Grades:
Grades are based on a total points system. Points will be earned for homework, tests and quizzes, notebooks, and class projects. Earned points will be divided by total possible points and multiplied by 100. Late work is not accepted, unless it is accompanied by a doctor’s note. Extra credit will not be provided, as students are expected to do the work they are assigned to the best of their ability, and turn it in on time.
