Jennifer Lockwood
realized that education was the field she felt most passionate about while
working towards her undergraduate degree in Theatre Arts. Ms. Lockwood had
the privilege of teaching workshops for high school students in the areas of
the Dramatic Arts. After receiving her Single Subject Teaching Credential
in Language Arts, Ms. Lockwood taught Language Arts and Social Studies at
Sylmar High School. In the summer, she traveled to Ghana where she taught
English to girls at a UNICEF school through the program Global Volunteers.
It was while working at Sylmar where a close friend encouraged her to bring
her talents to a brand new charter middle school, CHIME. At CHIME she was
able to refine her teaching skills and become a teacher of students of all
abilities. Ms. Lockwood became a master teacher and trained numerous
student teachers in the area of Language Arts.
Ms. Lockwood is a
member of Pi Lambda Theta, an International Honor Society and Professional
Association in Education. She is also a member of the National Association
of Secondary School Principals. During her teaching career she also
attended such workshops and trainings as the Charter School Leadership
Institute, Schools Attuned, the 5th Annual Southern California Teacher Forum
on Holocaust Education, What’s New in Young Adult Literature, AVID, Teaching
the Jane Schaffer Writing Program, and Sopris West: Language.
Through assisting in
the development of policies and procedures at the brand new CHIME Charter
Middle School, Ms. Lockwood developed an interest in school administration.
She began her studies at California State University, Northridge in the
Department of Educational Leadership and Policy Studies where she was able
to obtain her Masters in Educational Administration. As principal of CHIME
Charter Middle School for three years, Ms. Lockwood has been able to
facilitate the continuation of the Drama, Sports, Arts, Publishing,
Yearbook, and Science Enrichment courses. She has developed a close
relationship with the Parent Association, helping to facilitate fundraisers
involving the surrounding community. For example, through two
beautification grants and workdays involving Chatsworth community members, a
lovely mural was painted on the yard wall depicting varying aspects of the
school, the community, and the world at large. Ms. Lockwood looks forward
to applying for more grants to improve the school’s facilities and enriching
CHIME’s already high quality educational programs.
In CHIME Charter Middle
School’s fifth year of existence, Ms. Lockwood played an integral part in
obtaining a five year renewal for the school. She partnered with LAUSD in
rewriting the charter document to reflect new policies and intimately
describe CHIME’s programs. She looks forward to another five wonderful
years at CHIME Charter School!
